Researchers from the University of California at San Diego have found that Facebook posts with a positive tone tend to generate more positive updates from other users, and likewise negative posts encourage more negativity. However, the positive postings tend to be more contagious than the negative. In the study, scholars followed Facebook status updates from densely populated U.S. cities from January 2009 to March 2012 and then analyzed the data to establish their findings (Agata Blaszcazk-Boxe, “Your Facebook Status Just May Be Contagious,” NBC News at NBCNews.com, condensed from LiveScience.com, March 17, 2014).

The concept of the emotional state of social network users is a new area of study and scientists are keen to see where it may lead. Some scholars hope to use the information they gather to create an “epidemic of wellbeing” by strategic use of positive social network postings (Ben Spencer, “Happiness Is Contagious ONLINE: Positive Facebook Posts Travel Further Than Miserable Updates,” The Daily Mail at DailyMail.co.uk, March 12, 2014).

A merry heart…

The Bible contains many passages about the importance of a cheerful countenance or a positive outlook, especially in the book of Proverbs:

“A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones,” (Proverbs 17:22, NKJV, this and following verses).

Many studies have proven that those who face medical crises with a positive attitude often have increased immunity and recovery:

“The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, And a good report makes the bones healthy,” (Proverbs 15:30).

Filling our minds with the positive aspects of God’s way; the beauty of His creation, the endless peace and joy of His coming Kingdom, the fantastic future that is pictured by and the simple enjoyment of His Sabbath and annual Holy Days; is a daily antidote to the negative aspects of the world around us. Keeping a strong vision of the positive future God has planned and the soon coming leadership of His Son Jesus Christ is a vital element that kept the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and others strong as they saw their nations in peril.
